Trying to Explain Snow
Vienna (Carole Barley)

Trying to Explain Snow

I am trying to explain snow to a dead man.

The hush, like palms held an inch away
from revered cheeks;
Like bluewhite moonlight.

Snow makes heavy grandure of trees
thinned by winter,
my garden is diamante, and whichever
way my gaze falls a thousand colours
leap.

Snowflakes are best left to physicists to explain.
Infinite patterns, crushed underfoot to become
the clear cut hardness of ice.

The cold, how can I tell you of the cold?
